The Last Cheater’s Waltz

Emmylou was singing The Last Cheater’s Waltz,
Playing softly on the radio.
A tragic scene was played, and three lives were lost.
Victims of seeds they chose to sow.

Kyle woke this morning, and headed off to work,
Unaware of the fate that lay ahead.
A planned rendezvous, a date with destiny,
Would end up leaving three people dead.

Beth called her mother, and told her she loved her.
Her somber tone caused her mother to fear.
Beth said her goodbyes and then hung up the phone,
As she silently wiped away a tear.

Alicia looked forward to that afternoon,
She dreamed about the touch of Kyle’s skin.
They would meet at two in that motel room,
Where she’d be in his arms once again.

Everything was going according to plan,
But another plan would soon play out.
The last desperate act of a woman scorned,
The crime scene left little room for doubt.

Beth told the desk clerk that she had lost her key,
The name on her driver’s license matched,
So with key in hand, she unlocked the door,
Happy to find the chain wasn’t latched.

She pointed that thirty eight at Alicia,
And fired without giving it a thought.
She gave Kyle the time to beg for his life,
Then aimed for his head, and fired the shot.

When she was done, she turned the gun on herself;
That’s common with these kinds of assaults.
So the music plays as we clean up the mess,
To the tune of The Last Cheater’s Waltz.
