My Mystical Garden
23 March, 2005

I was awoken abruptly one night
By some flickering of lights
That seemed to be coming from my garden.

I blindly got out of bed
Threw a robe on
And went downstairs.

What I saw was nothing short of a miracle
As I stood there gaping at my patio door
I saw little creatures scuttling through the night.

These little people were a strange sort
Some were fat
Some were small
And some could fly.

I couldn’t believe my eyes
So many mystical creatures were in my garden
Going about their business
Not once did they pay me the slightest bit of attention
As I stood there gazing out my patio door.

The fairies were dancing on air over the flowers
Dropping gold dust on them
Their wings were of butterflies
With blue and green patterns woven into them.

I noticed little hobbits with hairy feet
Were digging under my fruit trees
Burrowing down to make new homes.

Nome’s were skipping merrily down the pathways
Causing mischief all through the night
Only stopping to laugh heartily at the trouble they caused.

I had to squint hard to see the sprites
For they were very tiny
The only reason why I had noticed them was because of the bright light
That seemed to shine from them.
They were gathering twigs, to build their nests in the bushes.

I also saw, to my amazement, tiny men in emerald green cloths
Pushing big pots of gold into bushes.

But the one thing I noticed most of all was the unicorn
That was standing in the middle of the garden
It seemed to glow with white light.
It illuminated the night into day
Its horn was long and spiraled like a conch shell.

I stood there for what felt like hours
Until I decided to run and get a camera
I dashed off as fast as I could.

When I returned I was greatly disappointed
For all those marvelous creatures were gone without a trace
Was I hallucinating?
Did I dream it all up?
I may never know.

This is by far, in my opinion, the best story poem I've ever written.
